Under British colonial rule, Ghana was called The Gold Coast, because of its immense gold deposits. It was named Ghana at independence in 1957, when it also became the first British African colony to gain independence. Ghana is bordered by the Gulf of Guinea to the south, also bordering Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Togo, and Burkina Faso to the north.

The total landmass of Ghana is about 238,500 square kilometres. Ghana contains plateaux, mountains, rivers, plains, and dams; with the Volta basin plateau rising like a saucer to a height of over 600 metres, and Mount Afadjato rising to over 880 metres at its peak. The dams supply electricity to the country.

Ghana has tropical climate, with an average temperature of 800F or 270C. The terrain is punctuated by dense tropical rain forests, savannah grassland, and scrub farming land. The forests contain valuable trees, which include: camwood, ebony, silk cotton, and mahogany, and wildlife
